Dear Readers,

I just finished Restore Me by J.L. Seegars, and honestly… I feel like I just got off a roller coaster.

The kind you enjoy—but also feel a little drained by once it’s over, and ready to get off .

Because while the plot itself isn’t overly heavy, it does carry weight.

Dominic is dealing with the emotional aftermath of a physically abusive father, the love of his life falls in love and then marries his best friend. Sloane is navigating a narcissistic, emotionally unavailable mother, layered with grief, loss, and severe anxiety. The parts that hit the hardest weren’t even the romance, it were those parent-child dynamics for me .

Because there’s something deeply uncomfortable about watching a child still love a parent who continues to hurt them.

I connected with Sloane in pieces. Especially in the way her mother constantly critiqued her life—like no version of her was ever enough. The pressure to be chosen, to be partnered, to be validated by a man… as if her life on its own didn’t hold value.

That hit.

But I’d be lying if I said she didn’t frustrate me too. The constant second guessing. The contradiction of her own thoughts and feelings, even while being in therapy—it felt exhausting to witness. I kept saying, ” Girl !! IKYFL!”

Real, but exhausting.

And Kristen? She felt frustratingly real.

The kind of real you recognize immediately. Holding onto something that’s already ended. Wanting to be chosen even when she’s clearly not. A true, ” Pick Me Girl”.

Now Sloane and Dominic…

They had something real. I believed in their connection.

There was safety there. But there was also toxicity that couldn’t be ignored.

They avoided hard conversations. A lot.

They built parts of their relationship on unspoken feelings, lies by omission, and physical intimacy that often replaced actual communication. And while I understood their pull toward each other, it felt like they kept choosing sex instead of honesty and transparency,

And that created misunderstandings that didn’t need to exist.

At the same time, I understood why they kept things private. Sometimes you need space to build something without outside opinions interfering.

As for the writing—I read nearly 600 pages in a day.

So yes, I enjoyed this book!

It pulled me in. The pacing worked. The story kept me curious enough to stay.

But the spice?

It was a lot. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I get what it was meant to show, but at times it felt excessive. I wanted more emotional depth in conversation, not just physical closeness.

Because if I’m being honest, I lean more toward substance than erotica.

If this book reminded me of anything, it’s this: Have the uncomfortable conversations. Say what you feel.

Overall, this was a good story. Emotional, messy and frustrating at times—but still one I’m glad I read.

And if you don’t mind the spice 🌶️, there’s definitely more waiting for you in this series.

As for me…I’ll take a little break before the next one.

I need something cooler before I jump back in.
