Dear Readers,

I grabbed this book on Kindle Unlimited, and it was my first time reading anything by Tia Williams. Right away, the chemistry between Eva and Shane pulled me in, they’re messy, magnetic, and you can’t help but root for them.

The back-and-forth between past and present felt necessary. It helped me understand how their connection formed and how that trauma bond followed them into adulthood. And honestly, Shane’s conversations with Eva’s daughter were some of my favorite moments. Those scenes added heart in a quiet, steady way.

Now, here’s the part I didn’t expect: I’ve never in my life thought something could feel too Black — but whew. At times it felt like every issue, every space, every layer of Blackness was packed in all at once. Classism, trauma, identity, art, health, society… all of it. And there were moments where I just thought, “Do we need everything in the same book?” It got overwhelming here and there.

The romance itself? Careful, thoughtful, and soft in a real-world way. It wasn’t overdone or unbelievable. Just two people trying to love each other while carrying a lot.

There are plenty of themes running through this story: long-lost love, trauma bonding, mother-daughter relationships, friendship, and the complicated ways we parent and heal.

The pacing was solid and kept me turning the pages, aside from those moments where it all felt a bit too heavy-handed.

Overall? Nice work. A good read with strong characters and real emotion. Even if some parts tried to carry more weight than necessary.
