It was amazing! I picked this book up after seeing someone in one of my book groups going OFF about how good it was, and I had to see for myself. I’ll be honest… the opening didn’t hook me right away. But once it got going? Whew. I was all in.

What really made this story hit was the characters. Born, Jada, Sunny, Dorian, Leo, Jamari . They were all layered, flawed, believable people carrying real trauma. Born’s rise while still wrestling with the pain of his father’s addiction stuck with me. Jada especially had my heart the whole time. Her struggles with addiction, childhood trauma, betrayal, and survival felt raw and honest. I didn’t judge her, I understood her. Even when I got frustrated, I was still rooting for her.

I also appreciated how the story started in one place and then circled back to show how everything unfolded. At first I questioned where certain pieces were going, but in the end it all connected in a way that made the story feel complete and realistic.

This book touches on some heavy themes :addiction, domestic violence, grooming, prostitution, grief, loyalty, betrayal, so definitely go in prepared for that. It’s gritty, emotional, and very human.

Overall, it was a solid read with strong character development and a storyline that pulls everything together nicely once you settle in. If you like urban fiction with depth, real-life struggles, and complicated characters, this one is worth checking out.
