Whispers of the Lake – Shanora Williams
When I finished this book, my immediate thought was: Shanora Williams is an amazing writer. She had me completely engulfed—I read this in just a couple of hours because I could not put it down.
The plot kept my attention from start to finish as Rose searched for Eve. What I loved most was that it was never just one obvious suspect. Everyone felt like a possible culprit, which kept the tension high the entire time. There were no slow spots for me. Eve’s journal entries were especially effective—they helped the reader understand her past, relate to her pain, and see the pattern of bad decisions she continued to make.
The truth behind Eve’s disappearance wasn’t what I expected at all, and the twist was well done. I’ll admit there was a brief moment where I suspected what was coming, but it didn’t take away from the impact when it was finally revealed.
Rose was hands down my favorite character. Regardless of the issues between her and Eve, she still chose to search for her friend. She stood her ground, fought for what she believed in, and refused to let herself be silenced. I loved that about her. Honestly, all of the characters worked—Jason, Alex, the Sheriff—everyone played their role well. The small-town dynamics felt very realistic, especially the way people conformed to a single narrative. Unfortunately, that part felt all too familiar.
The themes that stood out most were betrayal, abuse, family, forgiveness, injustice, and reconciliation. While I can’t say I personally relate, I absolutely understand them. The book handled these themes very well, and in true Shanora fashion, the therapist scene laid everything out clearly and powerfully.
Overall, this is a really good read, and I would definitely recommend it.
