The Bitter Truth by Shanora WilliamsMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Bitter Truth did exactly what I expect from Shanora Williams — and then some. It met my expectations and completely exceeded my imagination.
In true Shanora fashion, this is one of those books you cannot put down. You keep reading because you need to know what really went down. The plot is layered, messy, and very believable: a politician, an abusive and cheating husband, manipulation, inherited wealth, and secrets stacked on secrets. Every detail feels intentional, and saying too much would absolutely ruin the experience.
The ending? Satisfying. Every dog truly has his day… and Jolene? Jolene, Jolene, Jolene. Enough said.
Shavonne stood out the most to me. Her loyalty was unmatched and refreshing to see. Dominic, on the other hand, was beyond irritating — just straight eww. And Boaz? Emotionally flat. I honestly expected more loyalty from him to other characters, especially given everything happening around him.
This book does not shy away from heavy themes: betrayal, adultery, body shaming, eating disorders, mental health, suicide, rape, and abuse. It’s a lot, so sensitive readers should absolutely take note. Still, none of it felt careless or thrown in for shock value — it all served the story.
Bottom line: Shanora Williams never ceases to amaze me. Her writing is sharp, engaging, and impeccable as always. Good story, strong drama, real consequences. Read the book.
