With Love from Harlem: A Novel of Hazel Scott by ReShonda TateMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Okay sooo… I hadn’t read ReShonda since the Curtis Black era, but a friend surprised me with a signed copy after her Charlotte book signing — and listen… she did NOT disappoint.
The character that stayed with me most? Billie Holiday. Not just the legend, but how she was written here — bold, unfiltered, “say it how it is” energy. I saw pieces of myself in her… that no-nonsense friend who speaks her mind whether folks ready or not.
Now Adam? Whew… he tested my patience the entire book. Consistently. If you read it, you’ll understand. 😅
This historical fiction dives into racial injustice, betrayal, jealousy, infidelity, plus touches on addiction and mental health in a very human way. I loved how real events and actual historical figures were woven into the story — had me Googling nonstop. Anytime a book sends me down a research rabbit hole, that’s a win.
Super readable, steady pace, and honestly perfect for a Black History Month read (but definitely not limited to that). Emotional in spots, educational without feeling preachy, and very grounded in reality.
No spoilers from me… just know it kept those pages turning.
⭐️ Highly recommend.
